Unsaid

He watched the fine rain writhe through the night air like smoke,
Squinting hard,
Trying to force the shape of her into the formless mist,
Still trying to see her everywhere though he couldn't work the trick of it,
Refusing to accept the shapes of her lived only in his memory now.
How could you fit a whole person and all they meant to you inside a single skull?
An infinite labyrinth of paths not taken. Words unsaid.
He tried to find her anywhere outside of himself,
To bend the trees into her smile or the curve of her neck,
To find her voice in the wind.
He carried the words he'd meant to say in a pouch at his hip.
He didn't know what else to do with them.
